Cheer up.The heat will be high this month.Temperatures in the 90s are expected to continue for some time.
My shade cloth for patio maintenance plan calls for less time in the heat and more time in the garden to accomplish what needs to be done.Do you support me?
This time of year, you should do most of your outdoor chores early in the day.(This includes walking the dog as early as possible. Our dog, Ferris, doesn't like the heat.He is Of Irish descent and would be happy to have 365 days of cold.
I hand water containers and newly planted areas twice a day (at least). We've already planted basil for the third time.Several batches have been harvested, processed in olive oil, labeled and frozen.Ketchup this winter will have the added benefit of almost fresh, home-grown basil.(Imagine if the current cold winter wasn't so bad.)
Watering techniques
If you're too busy to water in the morning, try watering in the cool of the evening.(It won't be too cool, so fake it.)
Container plants quickly dry up at high temperatures, even in large containers. If the water is running down from the soil and is not saturated, try poking holes in the soil with large bolts or nails to create better drainage and ventilation. These holes don't hurt the roots at all, and many more go in.
When watered thoroughly (until the water comes out from the bottom), the container will remain well hydrated at the steam temperature of the night and the next day.

If your containers are on a hot surface or near a wall, take the time to water them quickly and thoroughly before you go to work in the morning.Yes, watering high in the air, as opposed to watering at the bottom of the plant, which is usually recommended.High-altitude watering is a good way to prevent or ward off spider mites, which like many plants that grow in high temperatures.A good dose of water can easily splash spider mites off the leaves, and at these oven-like temperatures, your plants will dry out before you get to work.Do this every morning if you can.
Consider moving your sunniest basket to a spot with half a day's sunshine until the temperature drops a bit.
Don't panic when you see plants wilting in the middle of the day, it's their reaction to the heat, and it's most common on leafy vegetables. If they are nodding their heads later in the day, they may need watering.Check the soil down 2 to 4 inches.Or use a screwdriver near a plant. If it comes down fairly easily, then the root area may be wet;If you push it down, it's too dry!If you push it down, it's too dry.
If in doubt, buy a $12 houseplant meter and poke it into the soil.Water deeply, about every 3-4 days, depending on how fast your soil is draining.
